Treat your mind to a challenge!
Theater In My Basement is pleased to announce its third show, mutant: A BEARER OF SHADOWS/a tone/text poem to Novarina. The story concerns a writer who steers his mind towards insanity as he grows as an artist. Playwright Emir Santiago worked with the artistic staff of TIMB to "re-conspire" the text from many different sources, including century-old anatomy and surgery books and throbbing accounts of insanity by those geniuses closest to madness, Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, and Artaud. The text is fitted together from fragments of disparate worlds, creating a piece that wars with itself and wreaks "linguistic carnage," using everything from obscenity to poetic language.
The project was conceived as a response to the extreme theories of Valere Novarina, a contemporary French playwright who defines his medium as a "Theater of the Ears," and who believes that flesh and physical reality are literally created out of words. Building on this foundation, director Ilana Lydia chose to root her production in the voice and in the world of sound.
Actors Trish Coyle, Lauren De Cicco, Becki Hanshe, and Miranda Zent first sought to make a complete environment vocally, before turning to the visual side of the performance. The result is a performance piece which uses language as fully as images to test the boundaries of reality.
The show opens June 14th and plays through June 30th, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 8pm. The performances may be seen at ASU, 10th Street and Mill in Tempe, in the Fine Arts Center' s Directing Studio (FA132). Tickets are $10. Please call (602) 278-9255 for more information or for reservations. Be warned that the show does contain strong language, and may be inappropriate for younger audience members.
