Algonquin Theatre Company's 2002/2003 Season

Where Comedy & Controversy Reign

Laughter on the 23rd Floor*
By Neil Simon
Oct 25th through Nov. 17th
This Broadway hit is a homage to the author's early days in show business when he worked as a junior jokesmith for Sid Ceasar's Your Show of Shows. He is stuck in a room with a bunch of the looniest comedy writers ever, which included Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Mel Tolkin , and Larry Gelbart.

The Gin Game
By D.L. Coburn
Dec. 6-29th
The Gin Game has been described as eloquent, funny and touching. The winner of the 1978 Pulitzer Prize uses the game as a metaphor for life. Martin Weller is playing solitaire on the porch of a retirement home. Enter Fonsia Dorsey, a prim self-righteous lady. They discover that they both hate the home and enjoy gin rummy so they begin to play and reveal intimate details of their lives. The secrets revealed become the weapons of the game.

The Road to Mecca
By Anthol Fugard
Featuring Jacqueline Gaston, Charles Sohn and Robyn Allen
(Ms. Allen appearing courtesy Actor's Equity)
Feb 28 through Mar. 23rd
The 1988 winner of the New York Critic's Circle Award for Best Foreign Play, this unusual drama focuses on Miss Helen an eccentric woman who lives alone in South Africa where she creates odd sculptures, which she call her Mecca. Miss Helen is in danger of being sent to an old-folk's home by the town Minister who finds her 'Mecca' a public nuisance. This is a penetrating study of the role of the artist in any society.
